Iraqi Army training at Al Gharraf

Australian and British soldiers based in southern Iraq have completed a training program for 750 Iraqi soldiers who are being sent to Baghdad in support of the Baghdad Security Plan.

The Iraqi soldiers from the Iraqi Army’s 2nd Battalion, 3rd Brigade, based in the Dhi Qar province, have been told they will be sent to Baghdad in the coming weeks to support counter insurgency operations.

The one-week of training conducted by the Australian and British elements was concentrated at the Iraqi Army Barracks on the outskirts of Al Gharraf and focused on further refining the light infantry skills of the Iraqi soldiers.

The training elements included contact drills, vehicle patrols, vehicle check points, house clearance tactics, public order drills and first aid.

About 100 soldiers from Australia’s Overwatch Battle Group (West) - Two were involved in the training.

Approximately 500 personnel, drawn mostly from Darwin's 1st Brigade, make up the Overwatch Battle Group (West) - Two (OBG(W)-2). The Battle group is helping the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) and Provincial Governments build a secure and stable Iraq. OBG(W)-2 operates in the Al Muthanna and Dhi Qar provinces as part of the Multi National Force - Iraq (MNF-I).
