Operation CATALYST: Image Gallery

22 December 2006
Operation of ScanEagle Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)

An unmanned aircraft, resembling a small plane, is being used in the deserts of southern Iraq and helping to protect the lives of Australian soldiers operating with the Overwatch Battle Group (West)-2 on Operation CATALYST.

The Australian Defence Force and The Boeing Company have been operating the ScanEagle, a UAV, during operations in the Al Muthanna and Dhi Qar provinces.

The ScanEagle UAV is manufactured by the Insitu Company and provides live imagery to Australians operating from Camp Terendak, Ali Air Base in the Dhi Qar province. This imagery is a key force protection asset for soldiers as they support Iraqi Security Force efforts in restoring security and stability in the region.

Approximately 500 personnel, drawn mostly from Darwin's 1st Brigade, form the Overwatch Battle Group (West)-2. The battle group is helping the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) and Provincial Governments build a secure and stable Iraq. OBG(W)-2 operates in the Al Muthanna and Dhi Qar provinces as part of the multi-national force.
