HMAS Warramunga departs HMAS Stirling

Commander John Hielscher and the 184 ships company of the ANZAC Class Frigate HMAS Warramunga, have been farewelled by family and friends as the ship departed her homeport of Fleet Base West at Garden Island Western Australia to commence passage to the Persian Gulf.

HMAS Warramunga will take over duties from HMAS Ballarat to provide an ongoing contribution to the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Iraq. This includes the important work of protecting IraqÕs offshore export oil terminals and monitoring, intercepting and boarding vessels suspected of illegally trafficking cargo that diverts funds from the Iraqi economy.

This is HMAS WarramungaÕs first deployment to the Persian Gulf and is the 14th rotation of Navy ships as part of coalition operations since 2001. HMAS Ballarat, which is currently on station in the Gulf, departed Australia in March 2006 and is planned to return to Australia in early September 2006.
