Members of the Security Detachment Seven (SECDET VII) conducting range practice
The 110 members of the Security Detachment (SECDET) primarily provide protection and escort for the Australian Government personnel working at the Australian Embassy located in Baghdad's International Zone.
SECDET currently includes infantrymen from the 6th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment, Australian Light Armored Vehicles (ASLAVs) and crews from the 2nd/14th Light Horse Regiment (Queensland Mounted Infantry) and a detachment of Military Police from the 1st Military Police Battalion.
SECDET is deployed to Iraq as part of Operation CATALYST, which is the Australian Defence Force's contribution to the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Iraq. Operation CATALYST commenced on July 16, 2003, and currently comprises 1370 ADF personnel.
Operation CATALYST runs concurrently with Operation SLIPPER, Australia's contribution to the War on Terror.
