Despite summer temperatures that can climb to over 50 degrees Celsius, the Al Muthanna Task Group (AMTG) is continuing its job in southern Iraq.

The AMTG is based at Camp Smitty, located near the Al Muthanna provincial city of As Samawah, and is home to Task Force Eagle, the joint British - Australian organisation that includes the The Light Dragoons of the British Army.

The 470-strong AMTG is a cavalry and infantry combined-arms unit created for the mission to Al Muthanna, and it provides both security for Japanese military engineer personnel conducting reconstruction tasks in the Al Muthanna province and training for the Iraqi Army's Second Brigade (10th Division) as part of Operation CATALYST.

Operation CATALYST is the ADF's contribution to the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Iraq. Operation CATALYST commenced on July 16, 2003, and currently comprises 1370 ADF personnel.

Operation CATALYST runs concurrently with Operation SLIPPER, Australia's contribution to the War on Terror.
