Australian takes command of Maritime Security Operations in the Northern Persian Gulf
In what is a significant event for the Royal Australian Navy, at 11.00am on the 17th of April, Commodore Steve Gilmore, CSC, RAN assumed command of coalition Task Force 58 in the Northern Persian Gulf from Rear Admiral Christopher Ames, USN (Commander Expeditionary Strike Group 5).
CDRE Gilmore is the first member of the RAN to lead the multinational task force in what is the highest level of tactical coalition command provided by the RAN in the Middle East Area of Operations.
The RAN previously held the command role in Maritime Interception Operations in the Gulf in 2002/03, however Commodore Gilmore's role will focus in the wider command role of Maritime Security Operations.
