Over the last seven months the Royal Australian Navy has been conducting initial training with the new
Iraqi Coastal Defence Force (ICDF)
and the official graduation ceremony at the Iraqi port city of Umm Qasr in southern Iraq on the 30th September 2004 marked the successful completion of this training.

The ICDF will now commence an operational training period to commence policing its coastline, waterways, ports, and vital oil terminals situated in the Northern Persian Gulf. A thirteen member training team from the Australian Defence Force conducted the training and includes twelve navy personnel and one member of the Australian Army.

The commander of the Australian Defence Force contingent in Iraq, Brigadier Peter Hutchinson, said the hand-over marked a major step on the road to Iraq's successful rehabilitation and reconstruction.

"The efforts of the Australian training team have been outstanding, and the fact that the new ICDF can now commence assuming responsibility for protecting its territorial waterways, is due in no small part to the efforts of this training team. Working together with other coalition partners including the United Kingdom, the United States, and the Netherlands, the Australian sailors played a key role in building the ICDF. This small group of sailors were responsible for the development of an effective training program which included seamanship, engineering drills, damage control, fire-fighting and search and rescue." Said Brigadier Hutchinson.

The Force Level Logistic Asset (FFLA) located in the Middle East Area of Operations is an organisation of about 40 personnel, split between Baghdad (FLLAB) and Kuwait (FLLAK).

They are responsible for providing a range of services to all the Australian force elements in Iraq and Kuwait. The FLLAK's main function is to run a large warehouse facility to support the stores and supply requirement for the entire force in Iraq and Kuwait. They also provide initial training for individuals transiting into Iraq.

The FLLAB is essentially a distribution centre for the stores and supplies that come in from Kuwait on C130 aircraft. It also has a trade support organisation consisting of a vehicle mechanic, carpenter, electrician, plumber and fitter armourer who provide trade services to all Australians throughout Iraq - although primarily for the Baghdad elements.
