Australian Army Training Team Iraq (AATT-I) renamed in honour of Vietnam Heroes

Australian troops assisting with the training of the Iraqi armed forces will now be known as the Australian Army Training Team Iraq (AATT-I) in honour of their Vietnam War predecessors, the Chief of Army Lieutenant General Peter Leahy announced today.

Thirty-eight Australian soldiers (supported by six support staff) have been involved in the training of 3300 recruits of the new Iraqi army in Northern Iraq.

They provide advice and guidance to the Officers and NCOs to enhance their training of the recruits.

The Commanding Officer LTCOL Ian Cruickshank said the deployment of the Australian Army training team - Iraq (AATT-I) has been a huge step forward towards the reconstruction of the Iraqi army.

Never before has the ADF been involved in training such huge numbers in a war zone.
