Weapon Training

Safety is a priority for the Australian Defence Force, and this is particularly important when it comes to the operation of the various weapons systems that are in use today.

While on overseas deployment, Australian Defence Force personnel not only have to be ready to operate these systems, but to maintain their technical qualifications that ensure they are certified to operate a particular weapon.

To provide members with the opportunity to maintain their training standards and also to expand the range of weapons they are qualified to operate, a week was set aside for training and qualification testing.

With the improving security environment in East Timor it was particularly important to have all defence force members who are deployed with the International Stabilisation Force to be qualified to operate the Browning MKIII 9mm pistol. This is the weapon most defence force members in East Timor now carry as a personal weapon instead of the larger 5.56mm F88 Austeyr rifle.

Personnel also had the opportunity to undertake additional training on weapons for which they had not been previously qualified to operate. These included the 5.56mm Minimi F89A1 light support machine gun and the 7.62 mm MAG 58 machine gun.

Instruction was provided by experienced instructors with a range shoots held for all qualifications at the conclusion of the training week.
