Operation Asute Remembers

Australian and New Zealand defence personnel deployed to East Timor with the International Stabilisation Force (ISF) marked Remembrance Day with a ceremony at Camp Phoenix in Dili.

A number of the sailors, soldiers and airmen and women deployed with the ISF have family who served in the Australian and New Zealand defence forces in previous wars, and they took the opportunity for silent tribute.

“My grandfather served in World War II,” Private Charmaine Elliott said after the service.

“We lost him this year, so for me it was a chance to think of my Grand father. and to say thanks for his mates who died in the war.”

ISF Chaplain, Major Andrew Rutley, led ISF the personnel in prayer to commemorate service members who have died for their country.

2009 is the tenth year of Australia’s military involvement in East Timor since the INTERFET mission in 1999.
