Lieutenant General Mark Evans visits troops in East Timor

The Chief of the Australian Defence Force Joint Operations Command, Lieutenant General Mark Evans, has visited the East Timor Area of Operation in order to see first-hand the progress that has been achieved in recent months.

LTGEN Evans was briefed on the current situation in East Timor by the Commander of the International Stabilisation Force (ISF), Commodore Stuart Mayer, and senior staff at the Joint Task Force Headquarters.

During his visit, LTGEN Evans also met with soldiers from Australia and New Zealand who are serving with the ISF.
LTGEN Evans said that he was impressed by the improvements he has witnessed since his last visit, one of many since he first visited East Timor in 1999.

Following civil unrest in East Timor that led to the creation of the ISF in 2006, social and political tensions in the nation have eased substantially. Business activity is expanding and East Timor’s fledgling tourism industry is showing signs of increasing the number of visitors to the country.

In another area that serves as a barometer of increasing stability, policing responsibilities have been transferred from the United Nations to the East Timor Police in three districts, with additional handovers expected in the coming months.

As the Chief of Joint Operations Command, LTGEN Evans is responsible to the Chief of the Defence Force for the planning and conduct of Defence Force campaigns, operations and other delegated activities.
