Gleno Stadium Rebuild

East Timor military and International Stabilisation Force (ISF) work to rebuild sportsground. After months of planning and work with the local community, soldiers and engineers from the East Timor military, the United States Navy Seabees and the ISF have restored the Gleno Stadium to its former glory.

When work began on the well-known landmark, the roof had collapsed, there was no plumbing in toilets, no electric lighting, and the change rooms were inhabited by rats.
Work at the stadium required the digging and cementing of new footings, the replacement of walls and finishing touches such as the painting of murals. The roof trusses were constructed in Dili by the ISF and East Timor Defence Force engineers with the assistance of local technical college students.

The return of football to this well-known landmark is another milestone in the restoration of normality for the people of the Gleno area. Teams from around the nation will now be able to bring football back to the stadium for all the locals to enjoy.

The official reopening of the Gleno Stadium took place on Saturday, 24th October, and included a football match between the Ermera and Dili district teams. Prior to the match, there was an Australian Rules football demonstration, a Royal Australian Air Force working dog display, and sporting competitions between teams from the East Timor Army, East Timor Police and ISF.
