Brigadier Bill Sowry Rewarded for His Achievements

The Medal of Merit (Medhala de Merito), one of the highest accolades that can be presented by the President of Timor-Leste, His Excellency, Dr Jose Ramos Horta, has been awarded to Brigadier William (Bill) Sowry for service to the country.

Brigadier Sowry is the Commander of the International Stabilisation Force in Timor-Leste and has been in the role since January this year.

In a small ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Dili, the Medal was bestowed by President Horta. The presentation was witnessed by the Australian Ambassador, His Excellency, Mr Peter Heyward, Commanding Officer of Timor-Leste Battle Group VI, Lieutenant Colonel Dave Smith and members of the Joint Task Force Headquarters.

The President thanked Brigadier Sowry for his support and for his extensive efforts to assist local youth in Timor-Leste, mentioning his determination to see the International Youth Award, the “President’s Award’ launched earlier this year.

Brigadier Sowry is about to hand over his Command after spending the past nine months in Timor-Leste as the Commander of the International Stabilisation Force, which comprises Australian and New Zealand personnel.
