Ten-Year Anniversary of INTERFET
Australia’s recent defence history with East Timor commenced in 1999, when INTERFET, led by then MAJ GEN Peter Cosgrove, came to Dili with the agreement of the Indonesian Government to restore peace and provide humanitarian assistance after post-referendum violence broke out.
INTERFET included contributions from 21 other nations including the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, New Zealand, Britain, the US, and Canada.

| V9916506 Lance Corporal (LCPL) Mick Hagenbach, 22 yrs, drives while Private (PTE) Kevin Frost, 25, mans the gun on one of Australia's two Bush Master prototypes in EastTimor. Three Bushmasters were on trial last year before the current design was accepted by the Austalian Defence Force. B1and B3 are currently deployed on Operation Stabilise in East Timor as convoy escort and VIP protection vehicles. Since their arrival the Bush Masters have mainly covered the Dili area with sortees out to Baucau and Balibo. The vehicle is designed to move Infantry troops into the field with greater manouvrability and protection than the 6 by 6 Land Rover which is currently performing this role. The armoured Bush Master can carry nine people for three days up to 1,000 kilometres on one tank of fuel. The armour plating offers protection from light infrantry weapons fire up to 7.62 mm as well as protection from land mines. Private Frost and LCPL Hagenbach have been stealing the limelight in the streets of Dili with their less-than-conventional troop carrier. The vehicles are based at Enoggera, QLD. Lieutenant Commander Parker, of Lorn, near Maitland, NSW, is a United Nations Military Observer based at Batugade on the border between East Timor and West Timor. A qualified naval clearance diver with Gulf War service, Lieutenant Commander Parker has also served as an observer with the United Nations in Iraq in 1998. He first arrived in East Timor in August 1999, but was evacuated on September 14 after the militia-iniiated volence erupted in the then province. He returned in October to continue with the UN's vital work in East Timor. Among his many tasks are monitoring of the border to assist with the repatriation of refugees, and meetings with the Indonesian authorities from West Timor Lieutenant Commander Parker is normally based at HMAS Kanimbla in Sydney.
