Celebrations for the 10th Anniversary of Popular Consultation of East Timor

The week of 24 to 30 August was a week of celebrations for East Timor as the country moved to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of Popular Consultation.

Troops serving with the International Stabilisation Force in Dili commemorated with the locals as part of a cultural day at the Dili Trade Expo on August 25th. The Maori Cultural Group comprising New Zealand members of B Company performed the Haka and Timor-Leste Battle Group VI teams battled members of the Timor Leste Police Development Program in the tug-o-war.

A few days later, soldiers and officers were playing the locals of Ulmera in volleyball and soccer as part of a sports-oriented cultural day.

The week included the official opening of the New Presidential Palace, attended by Commander of the International Stabilisation Force, Brigadier Bill Sowry, and an official parade to mark the 10th Anniversary.

Troops also had the opportunity to wave to their families when Sunrise’s David Koch, in East Timor to mark the celebrations, featured them on a morning broadcast.
