AUSTRALIAN Idol judge Ian “Dicko” Dickson visited East Timor for a series of live broadcasts from Operation ASTUTE in July 2009 for Melbourne’s Vega FM.
Dicko was entertaining the troops of Timor Leste Battle Group 6 (TLBG6) as part of a Forces Entertainment Tour which also included performances from Australian music legend Ian Moss.
Australian entertainers have maintained a long-established show business tradition of performing for deployed Australian Troops that predates the Vietnam War. These performances play a part in maintaining the morale of personnel who are far from home and who accept considerable hardship and danger in the service of our nation.
Operation ASTUTE is the ADF’s contribution in assisting to maintain peace and stability to East Timor, following a request from the Government of East Timor to the Australian Government.
The ADF deployed to East Timor to assist the East Timorese Government and the United Nations bring stability, security and confidence to the Timorese people. TLBG 6 is comprised mainly of soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment (2RAR).
