East Timor Recognition for Outstanding Service

On Thursday, 21 May 2009, the President of East Timor, His Excellency, Dr Jose Ramos Horta, formally recognised two Australian Army officers’ service to East Timor throughout the past ten years.
Major General Mick Slater, DSC, AM, CSC, and Major Michael Stone both received the Timor-Leste Medalha de Merito (Medal of Merit).
The Timor-Leste Medalha de Merito is the highest recognition that can be bestowed in East Timor.
Major General Slater also received the Medalha Solidariedade de Timor-Leste (East Timor Solidarity Medal).
Both men accepted the medals at a ceremony attended by guests including the Australian Ambassador to East Timor, Mr Peter Hayward, and Commander of the International Stabilisation Force, Brigadier Bill Sowry.
Major General Slater was part of the original Australian deployment into East Timor in 1999.  He also led the deployment of the International Stabilisation Force into East Timor in 2006.
Major Stone saw two deployments to East Timor from 1999 and deployed twice again as an advisor to the East Timor Defence Force.

Both men were recognised for their significant individual contributions to the security and stability of the fledgling nation.
