Chief of the East Timor Defence Force vists Australian troops in East Timor

Brigadier General Taur Matan Ruak, Chief of the East Timor Defence Force escorted Commander of the International Stabilisation Force (ISF), Brigadier Mark Holmes MVO, and Deputy Commander ISF, Colonel Peter Wood on a tour of Manatuto.

The General spent 25 years as a key member of the Resistance during the Indonesian occupation of East Timor, and had in place many hide-outs across the country. He spent 1998/99 hiding from the Indonesians in Manatuto, in the home of Resistance sympathisers.

Today he took the ISF Commanders to the house that became his home, and to meet the family that had protected him during that period. There he regaled them with stories of discovery near misses, and his exploits with the Resistance.
