USNS MERCY in East Timor

The Pacific Program is an annual humanitarian US led mission which visits countries of the Pacific Rim to provide medical and engineering assistance to developing nations on an annual basis.

The United States Naval Ship MERCY recently completed a two week visit to East Timor conducting medical and dental clinics, surgery and engineering projects. The ship is a 1000 bed floating hospital with 11 operating theatres and 500 medical staff on board.

In the first week of the Mercy's visit to East Timor medical staff conducted screening clinics across the country in order to determine patients for referral to surgical teams on board. Corrective surgery that only required a few days post operative care was conducted. Defence medical staff on board MERCY came from a number of countries in the Pacific region, including Australia.By the time the USNS Mercy left Timoreses waters the multi national medical staff had seen nearly 10,000 patients and conducted 270 surgical procedures.
