Destroying illegal weapons
The destruction of these illegal rifles was ordered by the Timor Leste Prosecutor General, Dr Longuinhos Montiero because the weapons, originally seized in 2006, were no longer needed for any legal proceedings. The people of Timor Leste are encouraged to alert authorities about the presence of any illegal weapons to assist in the continually -improving security situation.
The aim of the Australian contingent, along with the rest of the International Stabilisation Force, is to assist the Government of East Timor and the United Nations Police in providing a secure environment in which the various groups can peacefully resolve their differences.
Information on the latest situation is available on www.defence.gov.au. Please go to the web-blog on the front page (clicking on Operation ASTUTE) for the latest information and images.
