Capability demonstration at Aileu

The Timor-Leste Battle Group 3 (TLBG3) capability demonstration pits the International Stabilisation Force (ISF) and the Timor-Leste National Police (PNTL) against a jail escapee threatening the town. When the PNTL request the assistance of the ISF to recapture the thug, played by a TLBG3 member, the show gets on the road.

Sniper teams are deployed by RNZAF Iroquois, the Battle Group's quick response force move in to cordon and search the town and the thug is brought down by a Military Police working dog. With the offender’s minor injuries dressed by a Battle Group medic and in PNTL custody, the locals are free once again to get on with their lives.

The audience erupts in applause, but there’s more to come.

This is probably the only show where you get to go backstage after the performance, meet the cast and play with the props: the audience is given the opportunity to climb over the helicopters, ride around town in the armoured personnel carriers, handle the weapons and get up close and personal with 'Amy' the military working dog.

Beyond the obvious entertainment value, the demonstrations are designed to deliver some serious messages. They build trust in the ISF’s people and equipment, demystify its role and send a carefully-crafted message to anyone contemplating violence as a means to an end in Timor-Leste: you can’t run, and you can’t hide.

Operation ASTUTE is the Australian Government's response to a request from the Government of Timor-Leste to assist in restoring peace to their country.

There are approximately 780 ADF personnel currently serving in Timor-Leste. This force will remain in Timor-Leste continuing to provide a robust response capability to support the Government of Timor-Leste and the United Nations Police force.
