Soldiers train with Malaysian riot control unit in Timor

Soldiers from Battle Group Samichon in Timor Leste have conducted routine training and cooperation with the United Nations’ Malaysian specialist riot control unit.

The Malaysians were dressed in full riot gear with their distinct blue UN helmets. Their shields were raised and batons banging as they edged forward toward the imaginary crowd they were to disperse. In support were soldiers from Bravo Company, advancing several metres behind the Malaysians with CS gas at the ready.

In the training scenario, at the request of the UN Police Commander, the Australian soldiers moved in to provide additional security to allow the Malaysians to disperse the crowd.

Platoon commander 5 Platoon Lt Heston Russell said the training was a good opportunity for face-to-face contact with the Malaysians and learn how his soldiers could assist them when required to do so.

Operation ASTUTE is the Australian Government's response to a request from the Government of Timor-Leste to assist in restoring peace to their country.

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has deployed to Timor-Leste with a mission to assist the Government and the United Nations to bring stability, security and confidence to the Timorese to allow them to resolve their differences democratically and peacefully.

There are approximately 850 ADF personnel currently serving in Timor-Leste. This force will remain in Timor-Leste to provide a robust response capability to support the Government of Timor-Leste and the United Nations Police force.
