Townsville Battalion groups hand over in Timor

The International Stabilisation Force (ISF) and 2nd Battalion, the Royal Australia Regiment (2 RAR) flags have been raised together to signify the rotation of Timor Leste Battle Group responsibilities during a small ceremony at the force’s headquarters at Camp Phoenix in Dili.

The 2 RAR Battle Group, known as SAMICHON, has replaced the 1st Battalion, the Royal Australia Regiment (1 RAR) which has completed a six-month tour in Timor Leste. While based on 2 RAR, the Battle Group also includes elements from 4th Field Regiment, 7th Battalion, 3rd Combat Engineer Regiment, 3rd Combat Service Support Battalion and the 1st Military Police Battalion.

The 1 RAR Battle Group also included elements of the 3rd Combat Engineer Regiment, 3rd/4th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Combat Service Support Battalion and the 1st Military Police Battalion.

The ISF and 2 RAR flags were raised to the strains of bagpipes, with members from both battalions present in the tropical morning sun.

During the ceremony, the 1 RAR flag was lowered as the battalion prepared to finalise its return to Lavarack Barracks in Townsville.

Operation ASTUTE is the Australian Government's response to a request from the Government of Timor-Leste to assist in restoring peace to their country.

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has deployed to Timor-Leste with a mission to assist the Government and the United Nations to bring stability, security and confidence to the Timorese to allow them to resolve their differences democratically and peacefully.
