Reservists step up in Timor
On Op ASTUTE there is no distinction between Reserves and regulars. Five per cent of the 1 RAR-based battle group is drawn from the Reserves, and at JTF Headquarters this figure is an impressive 26 per cent; thus the provision of capability provided by Reserve forces is a significant 12 per cent.
Without the contribution provided by the Reservists, the personnel deployed to Timor Leste would find their demanding task even more difficult. Numerous critical positions, ranging from the Commander’s staff through to military police and logisticians are being performed admirably by competent and confident individuals from across the spectrum of society.
Further proving the quality and capability of the ADF’s Reservists is the fact that many demanding and essential roles are manned by personnel who started their careers in the reserve forces and subsequently transferred to the regular Army.
The performance of all Reserve forces members deployed to Timor Leste is a testament to the capability and calibre of individuals who place their civilian careers on hold to support the ADF’s significant contributions world wide. Without them, the troops deployed on Op ASTUTE would find their tasks much more difficult to achieve. Operation ASTUTE is the Australian Government's response to a request from the Government of Timor-Leste to assist in restoring peace to their country.
The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has deployed to Timor-Leste with a mission to assist the Government and the United Nations to bring stability, security and confidence to the Timorese to allow them to resolve their differences democratically and peacefully.
