Armoured personnel carriers in Timor

The type of Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) supporting security operations in East Timor is the M113-M1 APC. This APC has been in service with the ADF for more than 40 years. This vehicle type has been in theatres such as Vietnam Somalia, East Timor and other parts of the world.

This deployment as part of Operation ASTUTE is the last operational deployment for this APC type, as it will soon undergo major refurbishments and upgrades.

The APCs provide the infantry units with a capability to cover vast areas in a short time. They also provide a significant physical presence acting as a deterrent and rapidly diffusing potential trouble. The APCs are truly a force multiplier that represents a considerable contribution to the security operations in Timor Leste.

Operation ASTUTE is the Australian Government's response to a request from the Government of Timor-Leste to assist in restoring peace to their country.

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has deployed to Timor-Leste with a mission to assist the Government and the United Nations to bring stability, security and confidence to the Timorese to allow them to resolve their differences democratically and peacefully.

There are approximately 1000 ADF personnel currently serving in Timor-Leste. This force will remain in Timor-Leste continuing to provide a robust response capability to support the Government of Timor-Leste and the United Nations Police force.

Police from Australia and 24 other nations driveout the world provide security in Dili. The ADF provides support to these police operations as required.
