Timor gangs' weapon of choice

ADF personnel serving in Timor -Leste have quickly adapted personal protection equipment designed to defeat modern small-arms and fragmentation threats to the more traditional weapon systems that emerge during periods of gang violence.

These crude yet effective steel darts are fired by youths during localised street violence and cause significant injuries among locals participating in, or inadvertently caught in, violent outbreaks.

While the ISF's personal protective equipment, tactics, techniques and procedures counter much of the threat, the 15-25cm steel rods remain of high concern among soldiers supporting the United Nations Police.

The darts are fired through a hand-held catapult-type launcher and generate enough velocity to cause significant injuries or death.

The ISF and UNPOL have confiscated hundreds of the crude weapon systems since May last year.
