Memorial in the town of Balibo Timor-Leste
A delegation from the 6th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment (6 RAR), headed by Lieutenant Colonel Scott Goddard, paid their respects at a memorial in the town of Balibo Timor-Leste. The memorial reflects the contribution by the Royal Australian Regiment, to the independence of the nation of Timor-Leste and this visit re-affirmed the commitment by the Australian Defence Force to support the Timorese in their path to a peaceful and democratic country.
An extract from the memorial reads: "This memorial dedicated to the peace and prosperity of the people of Timor-Leste, commemorates the contribution of the Royal Australian Regiment to the creation of a secure, free and democratic nation".
Operation ASTUTE is the Australian Government's response to a request from the Government of Timor-Leste to assist in restoring peace to their country.
The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has deployed to Timor-Leste with a mission to assist the Government and the United Nations to bring stability, security and confidence to the Timorese to allow them to resolve their differences democratically and peacefully.
Following a general improvement in the security situation and the establishment of a comprehensive commercial logistic support contract, logistic elements of the ADF no longer required for these duties have returned to Australia, leaving about 800 ADF personnel in Timor-Leste.
