RAMSI 1st Anniversary Celebrations
Since arriving in the Solomon Islands on the 24 July 2003, the military contingent has, as part of RAMSI, made a significant contribution to the process of restoring security and law and order in the Solomon Islands. The military has provided security to the Participating Police Force to help in the restoration of law and order and to provide logistical support to RAMSI across the country.
Infantry personnel from both the Second Battalion Royal Australian Regiment and 5/7 Battalion Royal Australian Regiment have ensured a secure environment allowing the RAMSI Participating Police Force to focus on restoring law and order across Solomon Islands.
Military assistance in the collection of over 3700 weapons for the nation wide gun amnesty has helped achieve the significant progress in law and order.
Over the past 12 months, 4000 Military personnel have directly supported Operation HELPEM FREN.
The Military component of RAMSI is known as the Combined Joint Task Force 635 and consisted of Military personnel from Fiji, Tonga, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand and Australia.
Military engineers from the Darwin-based 1st Combat Engineer Regiment have constructed numerous accommodation and working facilities in Honiara and at the police posts on the Weathercoast and Malaita, with engineers also playing a key role in the destruction of weapons for the gun amnesty.
