A Pacific brotherhood in arms
A PACIFIC brotherhood-in-arms is successfully keeping the peace in Solomon Islands. Troops from Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea form the backbone of military support to the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands during Rotation 18 of Operation ANODE. The Combined Task Force (CTF) from the three nations comprises approximately 140 troops from Australia, 40 from New Zealand, and 30 from Papua New Guinea, in addition to military representatives from other Pacific Nations.
The Australian Commanding Officer of the CTF, Lieutenant Colonel Neil Grimes, said it was a real pleasure working alongside his regional counterparts.
“I’ve been very pleased with our Australian troops and also the troops from New Zealand and Papua New Guinea and our Tongan officer. They’ve worked well together, recognizing they all come from slightly different cultures. We share a fairly common history in many respects, and we’ve worked together many times before.”
Operation ANODE is the name of the ADF contribution to the Australian-led Regional Assistance Mission Solomon Islands (RAMSI). RAMSI's assistance is known as Operation HELPEM FREN (Pidgin English for 'Helping Friend'). RAMSI's mission is to assist the Solomon Islands Government in restoring law and order, economic governance, and improving the machinery of government.
Rotation 18 of Operation ANODE is mainly drawn from 4 Brigade in Victoria. They arrived in Solomon Islands in March 2009 shortly after assisting in Operation Vic Fires Assist.
