Solomons soldiers visit Mercy School

Australian soldiers of Operation ANODE’s Combined Task Force 635, led by their Commander Lieutenant Colonel (LTCOL) Ian Upjohn, took time out from their security work in the Solomon Islands to join the Commander of Participating Police Forces Denis McDermott, and Mr Tim George, coordinator of RAMSI, on a special visit to a local school in the Burns Creek settlement, just outside Honiara.

Basketballs, footballs, frisbees and a trampoline were just some of the gifts donated to the Mercy school run by community worker Mrs Beverly Komasi, which was started to provide access to education for under-privileged children in Burns Creek.

The soldiers including LTCOL Upjohn, played games with the children and read stories, while the students performed a number of displays including the "Bullfrog dance" for the delighted visitors.

Operation ANODE is the name of the Australian Defence Force contribution to the Australian-led Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI). RAMSI's assistance is known as Operation HELPEM FREN (Pidgin English for 'Helping Friend'). RAMSI's mission is to assist the Solomon Islands' Government in restoring law and order.
