Environment:

Defence recognises that effective environmental management is an important part of successfully undertaking Defence activities and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) capability and the Defence estate.

Environmental Policy

The Defence Environmental Policy as outlined in the Defence Environmental Strategic Plan 2006-2009 identifies the requirement to balance land, sea and air activities necessary to sustain ADF capability, while using a sustainable management approach that preserves a positive legacy for future generations. Defence also values its role as an environmental steward and the importance of perceptions within the community.
As such, an integral component of TS09 is the communication of potential environmental impacts associated with the exercise and the proposed environmental management measures to address these. 

Environmental Impact Assessment

Major exercises are subjected to a thorough environmental risk assessment as part of exercise planning and environmental impact assessment processes. 
In the case of Talisman Saber 09, environmental consultants Sinclair Knight Merz were engaged by Defence to develop a Public Environment Report for the exercise as part of the environmental impact assessment process.  Public consultation took place during October and November 2008.

Environmental Management

 For all aspects of the exercise, extensive consultation takes place between the Australian Defence Force, US Forces and Australian Government environmental agencies to identify and minimise potential environmental impacts through the development of Talisman Saber 2009 Environmental Management Plan.
Dedicated Defence personnel will ensure the enforcement and implementation of environmental procedures, oversee response to incident management, and organise for pre and post checks on environmental conditions.
At the close of the exercise, redeployment is managed on a policy of ‘no footprint’, with all exercise materials, equipment and debris removed and all disturbances (e.g. tracks, ditches) rehabilitated.
