4th July American Independence Day fireworks

American Independence Day marks the start of a new stage of the Rim of the Pacific Exercise. The Sea Phase begins this week.

The first force to depart Pearl Harbor will be the Expeditionary Strike Group under the command of Australian Commodore Stuart Mayer, embarked in USS Bonhomme Richard. HMAS Kanimbla and USS Cleveland are embarking allied forces today. A contingent of Australian soldiers from 2RAR is in Cleveland. Allied troops have also come aboard Kanimbla.
Meanwhile, HMAS Warramunga will sail mid-week for a series of evolutions including important weapons trials. HMAS Newcastle will follow a short time later.
More than 1200 ADF personnel are in Hawaii to take part in RIMPAC which is designed to test their interoperability with 14 Pacific Rim nations.

HMA ships Kanimbla, Newcastle and Warramunga and members of 2 RAR have been joined by RAAF AP-3C Orions from RAAF Base Edinburgh in South Australia and Navy Clearance Divers.

This is the 22nd RIMPAC. Hosted by the US Third Fleet and is the largest RIMPAC ever held.
