01 July 2010 HMAS Kanimbla kicked off the traditional RIMPAC sports carnival, with a narrow loss to the USN at Pearl Harbor. 17 members of HMAS Kanimbla’s ship’s company faced off against a team from the Aegis Destroyer USS REUBEN James. HMAS Kanimbla PT, PO Travis Lovell was delighted with the turnout. “We’ve had daily PT sessions (on the way over here) attracting between 40 and 60 people” POPTI Lovell said. “We put out an interest list for all the sports we thought would be on offer at RIMPAC. We finalised it, got approval for each person to play and here we are!” The soccer team was a good mix- from LEUT to SMN. Each member took to the field decked out in red and blue – HMAS Kanimbla’s colours. The first half was relatively uneventful. The Kanimblas appeared to dominate but couldn’t break through the REUBEN James backs and goalkeeper. It was nil-all at half-time. But it was then that the Americans turned up the pressure in what was to become a high-powered and at times physical clash. The Kanimblas attempted to use their superior numbers with some clever rotation of team members. But just minutes before the full-time whistle, the USS REUBEN James managed to slip past the Australian defenders making it one-nil. In this competition, a loss spelt elimination. While disappointing, HMAS Kanimbla was far from down. PO Lovell said the ship was also participating in individual sports such as tennis, golf or even surfing.
