PACIFIC PARTNERSHIP
20 July 2010 Twenty-five ADF personnel as well as both ships’ companies from HMA Ships Labuan and Tarakan have completed the first phase of Pacific Partnership 2010 (PP10) endeavours in Indonesia in the North Maluku Islands. Medical personnel from all three services worked within the wider PP10 team to treat over 5000 patients from the local area and also in the conduct of 150 surgeries onboard United States Naval Ship (USNS) Mercy. Engineers from 2nd Combat Engineer Regiment assisted in the renovation of two schools, completing tiling and painting works with United States Navy Seabees from Amphibious Construction Battalion 1. In addition, HMA Ships Labuan and Tarakan provided essential ship to shore logistics and acted as a forward operating platform for remote medical and dental clinics. The PP10 visit to Indonesia is a two phase disaster relief exercise which commenced in Jakarta in November 2009. A table-top exercise scenario dealing with a natural disaster in the region was the first phase during which the multi-national team discussed plans to effectively employ USNS Mercy, Indonesian Navy Ship KRI Dr. Soeharso and other ships' from the international community, including HMA Ships Labuan and Tarakan. The PP10 mission marks the fifth year of Australian support, and will provide engineering and medical assistance in Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, East Timor and Papua New Guinea.
