Solomons Triathlon on a Winner
The triathlon is a sport that seems to have been designed with Pacific Island people in mind and in the Solomon Islands it not only engages athletes but the entire community.
The Solomon Islands Triathlon Club recently ran its fifth event for the year on its course just to the north of the capital Honiara.
Australian and New Zealand soldiers from Combined Task Force 635 were asked to participate and several individuals and teams eagerly volunteered for the early Saturday start.
The Solomon Island athletes blitzed the field and showed why triathlon is a popular and growing sport in the region.
After the event the local community provided plenty of coconut milk and fruit for the competitors and spectators.
A fried chicken stall did cater to the more culinary adventurous but most of the Defence people took time out and went in for a relaxing swim.
