New roof and a brighter future

East Timor's only dairy is closer to producing milk and cheese commercially thanks to the efforts of East Timor Defence Force (F-FDTL) engineers.

The dairy at the agricultural Fuiloro College at Los Palos was refurbished with a new roof and truss system by F-FDTL engineers under the guidance of Australian International Stabilisation Force (ISF) and US Navy Sea Bees mentors.

The dairy project was the first to be planned and run by F-FDTL, and was a chance to showcase its growing capability to run projects for East Timorese communities.

The dairy was established in 2002 and is part of the Fuiloro College, where East Timorese children are taught animal husbandry and farming skills.

It is hoped the dairy will eventually produce milk and cheese on a commercial basis, in addition to supplying the needs of the college students.

“This is the first job the F-FDTL has run by itself,” Captain Stuart Davis, Advisor to the Timorese Engineer Commander, said.

“Before this they had assisted on jobs that we have run.”

Captain Davis is part of a three man Defence Cooperation Project (DCP) team mentoring the F-FDTL engineers. The DCP team also includes a WO2 and a Corporal.

DCP has provided F-FDTL with a second Bobcat to join its single pre existing Bobcat, and two excavators so the F-FDTL can commence civil works.

The F-FDTL engineer capacity has grown from 18 to 124 engineers.

“Our job is to enhance the professionalism of the F-FDTL and help them to become an effective engineer unit,” Captain Davis said.

Corporal Jeremy Dyson, of 17 Construction Squadron, provided close mentorship to the F-FDTL engineers.

“It’s great to be in this job,” Corporal Dyson said.
“This is a brand new army. We are helping them evolve into their own force.”

Australian Non Government Organisations Love, Life and Health, Rotary and Australian Volunteers International made contributions to the refurbishment project.
