ISF Section Challenge

Forces from the far reaches of the Pacific have tested their skills in a corner of East Timor.

East Timorese Defence Force (F-FDTL) soldiers, US Marines, New Zealand and Australian soldiers from the International Stabilisation Force (ISF) competed in a section challenge competition in Metinaro.

The competition pitted squads of about nine soldiers and marines against each other in a variety of skill-based scenarios.

The event was significant for the F-FDTL as it was the first occasion when East Timorese soldiers had conducted a live field firing practice, in this case a ‘falling plate shoot’ in which soldiers shot at scattered targets at ranges of 50-200m.

The section challenge also included a first aid scenario, observation lane, obstacle course, quick decision exercise and a final group sprint.

The F-FDTL soldiers were coached by members of the International Stabilisation Force (ISF), including Australian Sergeant Robert Ryan.
