Australian Patrol Boat Operations Demonstrated to East Timorese Defence Chief

The East Timor Defence Force (F-FDTL) has been provided with a hands-on experience of Australian patrol boat operations during a visit by the Armidale Class Patrol Boat (ACPB) HMAS Albany.

The Chief of the East Timor Defence Force, Major General Taur Matan Ruak, and a delegation of senior officers and instructors were invited onboard the ACPB to sail from Dili to the port of Com.

The commander of the International Stabilisation Force in East Timor, Commodore Stuart Mayer, said the visit to the HMAS Albany was particularly important for the F-FDTL with East Timor soon to take possession of two Oecussi Class patrol boats.

“East Timor is in the process of significantly increasing its capacity to protect its maritime area and the ISF is assisting where we are able to do so.

“The visit to HMAS Albany gave the Chief of the East Timor Defence Force and senior staff an opportunity to experience conditions at sea.

“The range of exercises that were undertaken also gave senior East Timorese military personnel insight into a number of the challenges faced in operating a patrol boat force.”

MAJGEN Matan Ruak said the Australian Navy’s demonstration and instruction provided valuable knowledge for when the new East Timorese patrol boats become operational.

The East Timorese delegation was able to observe and take part in a series of activities that will be an essential part of the F-FDTL’s maritime preparedness when it takes possession of the new vessels. These activities included boarding party boat drills from Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats (RHIBs), damage control exercises and casualty evacuation exercises.

The International Stabilisation Force is comprised of personnel from the Australian and New Zealand defence forces to assist the Government of East Timor and the United Nations to maintain stability and security for the East Timorese people.
