MTF - 2 work with 4th Kandak Recon Coy
Six Mentoring Task Force Two (MTF 2) soldiers are working with the Afghan National Army’s (ANA) 4th Kandak Kashp Coy (Reconnaissance Company) to improve its vehicle mounted and dismounted reconnaissance skills at Multinational Base Tarin Kot.
Manoeuvring vehicles in the battle space, establishing suitable observation posts, conducting security procedures at the halt and patrolling in a reconnaissance outfit of six soldiers instead of 12, are just some of the skills that the ANA’s soldiers are being taught.
MTF 2 Mentor, Cpl Christopher Harn, said that the primary objectives of the training were to complete the Kashp Coy’s mission essential task list (METL) and improve the soldiers’ vehicle mounted and dismounted patrolling skills.
“Reconnaissance soldiers are required to pass accurate information to command on the battlefield. Based on that information, command will manoeuvre its forces to deal with the threat at hand,” Cpl Harn said.
“We are teaching them the skills they require to gather and communicate that information effectively.”
The mentors observed the ANA soldiers’ strengths and weaknesses to determine what training they required.
“Firstly, we instruct the ANA’s warrant officers and sergeants, who then pass on the lesson to their soldiers.
“The warrant officers and sergeants then run an exercise to demonstrate to us what they taught their troops. As mentors, we watch the exercise and determine whether the soldiers have been taught the correct learning points or require more training.”
The 4th Kandak Kashp Coy’s training is being conducted inside the 4th Bde, 205th Corp Garrison.
