Prime Minister Visits Troops in Afghanistan

In her first visit to Afghanistan as Prime Minister, the Hon Julia Gillard MP met with Australian troops as well as military and political officials in Tarin Kot and Kabul yesterday.

Whilst at Multi National Base Tarin Kot, Prime Minister Gillard received briefs from Australian commanders, viewed an Engineer Search Demonstration, shared a barbeque lunch with Australian troops, and attended a shura (meeting) with key regional Afghanistan government officials and Afghan National Security Force commanders.

The Prime Minister later travelled to Kabul to meet with the President of Afghanistan, President Hamid Karzai, and the Commander of ISAF, General David Petraeus.

The Prime Minister was accompanied by the Chief of Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston, and Commander Task Force 633, Major General John Cantwell.
