MINDEF meets with officials in Kabul - Afghanistan

The Minister for Defence, Stephen Smith MP, was in Afghanistan today on his first overseas visit since assuming the Defence portfolio.

Minister Smith met with a number of Afghan officials in Kabul, including the Minister of Interior, General Bismallah Khan Mohammadi, and the Minister for Defence, Abdul Rahim Wardak to gain a better understanding of the situation on the ground.

He had a number of high-level discussions with Australian and senior military officials including the Australian Ambassador to Afghanistan, His Excellency Paul Foley, and the Commander of ISAF, General David Petraeus.

During his visit Minister Smith was accompanied by the Chief of Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston, the Secretary for Defence, Dr Ian Watt and the Commander of Joint Task Force 633, Major General John Cantwell.
