Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal in the MEAO

The Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal will cover more than 15,000 kilometres at the weekend, to reach ADF personnel deployed to operations across the world.

The 45th annual doorknock will visit personnel in the Solomon Islands, East Timor and the Middle East, as well as 12 other locations in an effort to hit this year’s $75 million fundraising target.

Acting Deputy Chief of Joint Operations Commodore David Johnston said the Red Shield Appeal had strong links to the military, drawing its name from the Red Shield emblem used by Salvation Army chaplains and support workers during the two World Wars.

“Our deployed personnel are known for their generous support to fundraising for a good cause,” Commodore Johnston said.

“We’re calling on them to make donations for the Salvation Army and its Red Shield Appeal.”
The first Red Shield Appeal doorknock was held in 1965 in response to concern about the need for funds to meet the ever-increasing demand on Salvation Army social services.
