Chief of Army Visits AMAB
The Australian Chief of Army, Lieutenant General (LTGEN) Ken Gillespie, Visited the main Australian Defence Force staging base for Middle Eastern operations located at Al-Minhad Air Base in the United Arab Emirates.
LTGEN Gillespie was met and escorted around the base by the Commander of Australian Forces in the Middle East, Major General (MAJGEN) John Cantwell. During the tour LTGEN Gillespie was shown the new medical, dining, warehousing, and Middle East Area of Operations (MEAO) Induction Training facilities.
Home to a significant amount of Army logistical and headquarters staff, the base is the entry point for all Australian soldiers, sailors and airmen deploying into the Middle East Area of Operations on Operations Slipper or Kruger. The Australian Air Force operates AP-3C Orion Surveillance, and C-130 and C-17 transport aircraft from the desert strip, flying personnel and cargo to various locations across the continent.
