1st Mentoring Task Force and Afghan National Army find weapon cache

A large cache was discovered by a partnered 1st Mentoring Task Force and Afghan National Army dismounted patrol in the Mirabad Valley region on Anzac Day.

The cache was identified by Afghan solders who observed an irregularity in the mud floor of a quala (walled housing complex). The Afghan soldiers, supported by their own engineers, conducted an assessment of the cache, secured the site and safely recovered its contents.

The large cache contained three 107mm rockets, 27 Rocket Propelled Grenades, thousands of rounds of 7.62mm ammunition of the type used in the AK47 and a small quantity of various small arms and machine gun ammunition.

Australian soldiers who observed the operation to safely recover the cached items were impressed with the capability shown by their partnered Afghan soldiers.
