Food For Thought

One of the many ADF assets located at the Multinational Base Tarin Kot (MNB-TK) is the Forces Support Team., which provides logistical support to the First Mentoring Task Force (MTF-1) as well as the Special Operations Task Group (SOTG).

Forces Support Team Tarin Kot (FST-TK) responsibilities include catering, base maintenance, cargo movement to and from the aircraft flight-line, environmental health, mail, administrative and stores support, ammunition storage, and support to air movements in and out of MNB-TK.

There are a number of dining facilities at MNB-TK and FST is responsible for catering to the main dining facility, which feeds up to 2,000 troops and support personnel during each of the three meal sittings per day. FST also provides army cooks to the MTF1 patrol bases located throughout Tarin Kot, Chorah, Baluchi, and Mirabad.

Catering to the many troops in TK is a round-the-clock job for the military staff and contractors. Approximately 12,000 kilograms of meat and 14,000 to 16,000 kilograms of fresh fruit, vegetables and eggs are prepared every week.

Fresh produce, eggs and Dutch specialty foods are air-freighted into Tarin Kot to ensure the best possible quality while frozen foods such as meat, dry goods, and water are road-freighted.

Statistically, the Australian TK Military Post Office may be one of the busiest post offices per capita in the world with over 1.5 tons of mail and over 100 bags of parcels processes every week.

The lone postie works twelve hours a day seven days a week to ensure that the Australian troops receive the love from home and to ensure that the soldiers mail makes it home.

The FST includes an Officer in Command, operations personnel, administration personnel, psychologists, drivers, terminal operators, quartermaster staff, air dispatch personnel, tradesmen, plant operators, a postie, environmental health staff, cooks, and ammunition technicians.
