Aussie Engineers Train Afghan National Army

Engineer mentors from the First Mentoring Task Force go the extra mile to ensure the Afghan Army engineers are equipped with the technical know-how to counter the insurgency's IED threat.

The Australian engineers conduct training programs that test their counterparts' knowledge and practical skills. Part of this training is in the use of mine detectors, recognising and exploiting IED emplacements, and identifcation of IED components.

The training program provides for knowledge sharing and ensures that ANA engineers work to their full potential. The ANA and MTF1 engineers are developing a strong relationship with a better understanding of each others equipment and capabilities.

MTF1 engineering mentor Corporal Damien Flanagan siad that the training program has been very successful with the ANA engineers proving themselves well-rounded.

"The ANA engineers demonstrated throughout this program that their training under previous Australian contingents in cache and IED finds was of a very high standard and thorough," Cpl Flanagan said.
