Navy helps boat to get back in the right direction
Whilst deployed on counter- terrorism, counter-narcotics, and counter-smuggling operations in the Gulf of Oman, HMAS STUART (CMDR Andrew Masters) conducted repairs to a stranded fishing dhow.
In the early hours of Monday 22 February, 2010, STUART was on routine patrol when the crew detected a vessel in the area and closed to investigate. The dhow was making slow headway with lines in the water. During the query it came to light that the dhow had snapped its rudder post and was using sea anchors to maintain limited steerage. Closer inspection by STUART's remote onboard cameras confirmed that the dhow’s rudder had snapped off above the waterline.
