| COME THIS WAY: Crowds will swarm to RAAF Base Edinburgh on October 27 and 28. |

The people of Adelaide will certainly know about the Defence Force Air Show at RAAF Base Edinburgh this year, thanks to a bit of creative advertising.
Four large billboards (with the design pictured above) have been placed on all major roads leading into and out of Adelaide and Edinburgh, with approximately 2.4 million people expected to pass the signs in the next few weeks leading up to the air show on October 27 and 28.
That’s about 44 per cent of Adelaide’s population.
Working on the billboard design was Defence Publishing Service (DPS) graphic designer, Byron Little.
He had worked on the last three Air Force Annuals, the artwork for the CAF Conference and the gala dinner for the Avalon Air Show.
“I chose the direction concept, with arrows and the feeling of going upwards with the [cyan] colour working well within the concept,” Mr Little said.
“The same text was used on the last few air shows with the only difference being that no pictures were used, only graphics. That was in case people were disappointed with the aircraft on the billboard not showing up.
“I believe it’s quite striking and will stand out from a distance.”
Avalon Air Show used billboards, and, due to their success, Air Force decided to give them at try for the Edinburgh event. “The Defence Force Air Show at Edinburgh needs to be advertised to the Adelaide community. One of the most effective ways of advertising is the use of billboards in high traffic areas,” Deputy Director Communication and Reputation Management WGCDR Jo Elkington said.
DPS are now also able to support Air Force heraldry requirements, such as new badges for Air Force units.
“In the past we have had to use an artist and this can take a long time. DPS have created a digital template for us and we only have to add the specific artwork for the individual units. This saves a great deal of time and cost and gives us a very high quality basis to work from,” WGCDR Elkington said.
Sara Tennant from Defence Public Affairs – SA said they were “very impressed” with the billboards. They will be placed in Lonsdale, Marion, Pooraka and Windsor Gardens following the main Adelaide arterial roads. |
