SGT Madonna Doyle won her third women’s crown in an all-Air Force affair at the recent Australian Defence squash national championships at RAAF Base Williamtown from August 20-24.
The competition attracted 47 players, with 278 matches being played over the five days.
SGT Doyle dropped only one game in the round-robin, losing by a point to friend and rival Army SGT Kim Booth-Collis. She had expected to play SGT Booth-Collis in the Friday final but met in the semis instead, with SGT Doyle winning 3-0.
LACW Tracey Cumming and Julie Medway met in the other semi-final, with LACW Cumming winning convincingly 3-0.
In the final, LACW Cumming was hungry for the title as she steered the ball to Doyle’s backhand. With the game at 1-1, the two battled toe-to-toe but LACW Cumming’s variety at the front of the court took the third 10-9.
In the fourth and fifth, LACW Cumming faded and SGT Doyle bored in, hitting the ball hard to the back. She won in five sets and also won the women’s Masters title 3-2 against Julie Medway.
In the men’s open round-robin, SGT Darryl Ferguson dropped only one game, earning him a position in the finals. In the final, he met PO White, with spectators treated to a scintillating display of long rallies, creative shots and amazing agility. PO White won 3-0 (9-6, 9-2, 9-1) but the score did not reflect the closeness of the games.
After the match, SGT Ferguson said: “I am not playing competition squash at the moment, so I suppose the loss was inevitable.”
In the men’s Masters knockout, FSGT Brett Parker met PO White in the final, where his considerable physical investment to win the first set clearly took its toll.
PO White carved his way through the next two games with a series of stunning winners before FSGT Parker regained a degree of control in the third but was not able to maintain his challenge and PO White won 7-9, 9-1, 9-1, 9-2.
The finals of the graded events were hotly contested with Air Force making appearances in most. FSGT Dave Perry was runner-up in A-grade.
In the B-grade final, WOFF Dave Street left PLTOFF Adrian Willey dazed with his cheeky reverse boasts in winning 3-0. In C-grade, FLTLT Brad Armstrong beat FSGT David Peters.
The Air Force team of SGT Ferguson, LAC Craig Baldwin, FSGT Parker, LAC Brendon Munday, SGT Doyle, and LACW Cumming were far too strong in the inter-Service event.
They beat the APS team before downing Army in the final to retain the title for a record sixth consecutive year.
GPCAPT Les Armstrong (ret’d) was formally recognised for his contribution to the formation and development of ADF squash. GPCAPT Armstrong was instrumental in its foundation in 1986 and was president for many years. He has remained closely associated with ADF Squash and has watched the club grow to more than 600 members.
