Air force returned the best individual gross score and finished third in the teams event as Navy won its fourth successive Western Australian inter-Service golf championship recently.
A lack of big-name players proved no hurdle to Navy retaining its crown in the face of concerted efforts by Air Force and Army.
Best gross score for the day was 81 by FSGT Col Moss who held out to his nearest rival and playing partner, MAJ Steve
Mcconnell, by one shot.
The team competition was a stroke event, with the winning team determined by an aggregate of their top five gross scores.
Navy was successful with 447 to Army’s 481 and Air Force’s 491.
“This is the fourth year in succession that Navy has won the title and it highlights the depth of talent in WA Navy golf,” team captain PO Warrick Preston said.
Spirited competition was the order of the day with many tight battles punctuating the lush fairways and greens of the Ellenbrook course.
PO Dave Kurts won the net event with a remarkable 62 (gross 84). “A great sense of esprit de corps was prevalent throughout and, while some pride may have been dented, everyone present thoroughly enjoyed both the course and competition,” PO Preston said.
Meanwhile, Air Force finished top of the ladder but suffered a form lapse in losing the 2007 Sir David Martin golf grand final 6-1 to Army at Kogarah Golf Club in Sydney on August 10.
Teams competed to decide final ladder positions, with 51 players participating.
A close game was expected between Air Force and Army, with one win apiece in games against each other during the year. Air Force was the clear favourite to win after suffering only one loss for the year – against Army in the first round.
Air Force had shown great form leading up to the final, winning its matches easily.
In the game that really mattered, Air Force registered its worst result for the year with only one player showing the form that put it top of the ladder.
The Sir David Martin competition will resume next February. |
